Writing & Editing

Eager to share your insights but just can’t find the time?

Having trouble organizing your thoughts in writing?

Feeling frustrated in the final stages of a book project?

I’m here for you.

How do you tell a story?

It begins with the questions you ask yourself, and who is listening. As a trained ethnographer, I am a patient and inquisitive listener. I strive to put people at ease and build a feeling of trust and understanding (what anthropologists call rapport). My long experience as a team athlete (in soccer, ice hockey and rugby) has also taught me the crucial importance of honesty, initiative and clear goals.

Together we could…

    Write a book

How does an idea transform into a book? Having the right topical expertise and knowing how to write a book are two very different skills. And writing immerses us so fully in our research that we often forget what it’s like to be outside, looking in. My job is to help you explore, organize and shape your ideas into an engaging story. My past book collaborations include a Wall Street Journal national bestseller and titles by some of the most innovative thinkers in their fields.

    Finish your book

We live busy lives in a hectic, overworked world. Sometimes it’s hard to stay focused and complete the bigger projects (especially those that are labors of love!). I can help you get that manuscript ready for print by providing developmental and traditional copy editing, fact-checking and the formatting of endnotes. For one recent project, I helped an academic author improve their writing clarity, build a narrative arc and trim their book manuscript by 30,000 words.

    Write a book proposal

It’s often hard to take the first step on something as big as a book. Where to begin? How to make it all fit? And will it sell? I have collaborated with academics and others to craft proposals on a wide range of topics, from neuroaesthetics and social psychology to data science, the gig economy, career guidance and the ethics of the digital age.

    Make your ideas more accessible

What is it you want to share, exactly, and why? My academic experience allows me to navigate through the jargon and theory of scholarly writing and pick out the meaningful nuggets within. I specialize in summarizing complicated scientific research (think: neuroscience) in accessible and engaging prose written for a general audience. Together, we can share your findings with the world!

    Deepen your impact

Is what you have to say truly original? Why does it matter? Grasping and articulating exactly where our ideas fit into the vast landscape of knowledge can be challenging. I can help you sound out the relevant research (with an archaeologist’s diligence) and make a compelling statement about what you have to offer.
