Marquesas Consulting

Interested in featuring the Marquesas in your work? Curious about how to engage Marquesans in your own project? Need help translating information about the Marquesas into French and Marquesan?

With over two decades of experience studying and working in the Marquesas, I have become a specialist. And I am eager to share!

I have consulted on a variety of projects relating to Marquesan resource management, endangered species and the Marquesan language.

    Advice & Translations

In 2019 and 2020 I worked with Wild Cherry Media to translate the subtitles for Guardians of Ua Huka into French and English from Marquesan. Featuring Marquesan life and two species of endangered endemic birds, the film is based on a project led by Oxford University researchers Liv Grant and Annika Schlemm. Watch it on Vimeo, or read more about the project.

In 2020 I helped to name a giant manta ray observed by the Manta Trust in the waters around the Marquesas. Its name is mokai, which means good luck in Marquesan.

    Featured Interviews

I was interviewed for the 2022 Atlas Obscura piece, “What the World’s Most Remote Islands Were Like Before Humans Arrived”, on contemporary Marquesan life and the insights gained from excavations by the archaeologist Melinda Allen.

Read any French? See Part 1 and Part 2 of an interview with the Basel Museum of Culture about the return of Marquesan objects to the island of Hiva Oa.

    Cultivating Connection

Scientists, photographers and other artists have contacted me for guidance and advice about traveling, living and working in the Marquesas. Got questions? I’m happy to chat.
